The Great Mother, tyrannical chief deity of the beholders, held her Realm of a Million Eyes on the 6th Layer. Lolth (also main Goddess of the Drow) spun her webs on the 65th layer in the midst of a maelstrom that was the portal to her abode on the 66th layer. (the following list covers only few of the names known to rule in the Abyss, further lore knowledge needed to uncover more names of importance) Those deities for whom the chaotic evil nature of the Abyss was attractive at some point in time, along with the demon “royalty” whose names were not spoken openly in civil society, were: Most of these powers hate each other and constantly war each other demon armies to conquer more layers and territory. Relatively few greater powers carved out a realm in the Abyss because dealing with the ubiquitous hordes of demons and ambitious demon lords would require too much of their attention. Over time, the Abyssal influence and the long-term presence of one or more demon lords could permanently corrupt that entire world, effectively converting it into a new layer. Only a full scale demon invasion lasting months or years, with power of portals power and magnitude growing over time thanks to demonic minions presence, could reach the stage where a Demon Lord would be able to step into the material plane. If left unchecked, the continued presence of demons in a world in the Prime Material plane could erode the barriers between that place and the Abyss, leading to the opening of one or more portals and an ever-growing demonic presence.
The total number of Abyssal layers was not fixed at any given time, due to the ever-expanding and corrupting nature of the plane. The Abyss’s place in the cosmology of the Forgotten Realms shifted over time, but the nature of the plane remained fairly constant: a violent, malevolent place where the strong survived on the backs of the weak, the weak conspired to overthrow the strong, alliances only lasted while convenient, and the landscape itself tortured the mind and body of all who dared to pass The Infinite Layers of the Abyss was the birth place of the demons, a chaotic evil universe unto itself with uncountable layers of infinite variety connected haphazardly.
